Discus fish are especially sensitive to fluctuations in temperature. You will need a thermometer to verify that your tank is at its proper temperature. Two common types are available: bulb thermometers and flat thermometers. Bulb thermometers work the same way as the ones you buy for your house. They can hang from the top of your tank or float along the surface. Often, they include a sucker so that you can stick them to your tank. At the hatchery, we use a variety of bulb and digital thermometers.

Flat thermometers, on the other hand, feature a flat design that sticks to the outside of the glass. Liquid crystals activate at a certain temperature and indicate a numerical temperature on a bar sliding along a scale.
