Pruning Your Aquarium Plants

Similar to land plants, aquarium plants need to be pruned and thinned on a regular basis. Most of the tall plants with stalks of plants will grow right out of the water if they are not pruned regularly. Other tall species of plants will grow along the surface of the water, blocking out light to plants lower down in the tank if they are not pruned on a regular basis. For many plants, cuttings can be replanted.

Tall Aquarium Plants

When dealing with Swords and other leafy plants, you might need to remove the outer leaves to make room for new growth. If your plants have floating leaves, they will need to be cut so that they are not blocking light from lower plants. You will have to remove the upper leaves, leaving only the lower leaves.

Dense plant branches are also an indication that it is time for a pruning. In this case, you just need to remove some branches until it looks full, but not over crowded.
