Albino Red Alenquer Discus, Uniform Pattern
$98.00 – $144.00
Fresh papaya. Coral nail polish. Hibiscus in full bloom. Memories of all the best parts of a bright day in Brazil are swirled together in the color of the Albino Red Alenquer Discus.
Seeing this beautiful fish reminds me of my first solo trip anywhere, to Rio de Janeiro. It is as round as the plate of papaya the landlady of my hostel had ready before I set out for the day. Apprehensive but adventurous, I took a cab to the top of Mount Corcovado to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer. I was terrified that Candido, my cabdriver, would rob me, but instead we ended up sitting at the base of the statue, having a coffee together. He told me with great pride about all the nature in Brazil, as we gazed at the plants and birds around the mountains. He said I should try to see the Amazon River while I was visiting.
Then we saw the clouds shift to reveal the statue to the gasps of the crowd. Candido smiled at their delight.
I didn’t make it to the Amazon on that trip, but looking at the colors of this fish makes me think the Amazon finds a way to us anyway. I would like to give one a good home here, so I am reminded of the kindness and pride I met in Brazil. I think I will name him “Candido.”
