Golden Checkerboard Pigeon Discus
$63.00 – $193.00
Some collectors enjoy a full pronounced bodied pattern. Others enjoy a “fadeaway” effect where the pattern begins to disappear towards the tail of the fish.
On sunny summer mornings in Northern California, my grandmother would create golden, flat cornmeal cakes called johnnycakes. At first glance, one might mistake them for traditional pancakes, and they wouldn’t be far from correct.
These golden-patterned crepe-like treats were smothered in butter and when on the grill, looked not unlike these bright, multi-toned Golden Checkerboard Pigeon Discus. In fact, the red eyes and tail, seem to be the only distinguishable features of this unique strain. As a child, I delighted in watching the cake batter spread into perfect circles and the bubbles pop on the grill. The anticipation of seeing them on my plate, was almost more than I could handle.
The anticipation of things to come may awaken similar feelings of childhood nostalgia, just like waiting for that perfect discus to arrive at your doorstep. And seeing it in the aquarium, with its golden patterns floating through clear ripples of water, might be just what you need to accelerate your anticipation of summer.

My wife and I live in Anchorage, Alaska and decided to order discus from Discus.com after speaking and emailing with Michael Li. Michael was extremely communicative, helpful, and reassuring throughout this somewhat stressful process of shipping seven discus to us in the middle of winter.
All seven fish arrived alive, healthy, and warm with one struggling a bit the first night. Michael was on the phone with us (and it is a 4 hour time difference between AK and the East Coast) throughout the unpacking/acclimation process. Within 12 hours of arriving in our aquarium all seven (including the one that had a rough few hours) were shoaling together, eating, and brightening up. Michael and Discus.com have exceeded our expectations by a LONG SHOT! We plan on only going through Discus.com for all future discus fish transactions.
I have been working with the discus. Wow are they beautiful! I didn't think they were going to be so big, either. If these are small, then I wonder what medium is. One of the Tangerine ones is very feisty. He only acclimated for 20 minutes before he wanted out of the bag. They are all swimming happily through the plants right now. The inside of the box was wet. 2 of the bags - one tangerine and one yellow leaked. But there was enough water to cover the fish left in the bag. Thank you.
