At the beginning of my geology journey in the Pioneer Valley, our class took a field trip to the local range just a couple miles outside the borders of our town in search of specimens. Many of them weren’t flashy, but one specimen did catch my eye that day – it was a chunk of grey bedrock with glowing, dark red spots throughout. The spots, we later learned, were red garnet – a beautiful mineral and birthstone. I thought that I wouldn’t see anything prettier that day, but I was in for a surprise.

When I lay eyes upon the Golden Leopard Snakesin, I feel the same amazement that I did when I first laid eyes upon a specimen of striking red spinel crystals growing on white marble. Imagine at least a dozen clusters of reflective, ruby-red crystal laid across a sheet of marble as white as fresh snow.

The spotting on this fish is not unlike the shine of red jewels dashed dramatically across opaque, marble-white scales. The impressive spotting is combined with the citrus-orange hues of fiery opal on the fins, mouth and eyes. The addition of this fish to a home would not only be a pleasing centerpiece, but also a reminder that the hidden beauties waiting to be uncovered in the Earth can be reflected right in one’s own aquarium.

The fish arrived and look like they're doing okay. They are absolutely beautiful! We have them in their own 20 gallon tank. We're going to keep them closely monitored and if there are any issues I will be sure to take photos and let you know.
