Virgin Alenquer Snakeskin Cross Discus

When a Virgin Alenquer Snakeskin Cross floats past, there’s a sudden burst of gold and some scarlet flashes, crowned by a feathery crimson dorsal fin. It reminds me of a Native American chief’s headdress, one I saw long ago in the New Mexican desert. I was a city kid, born and bred. It was my gap year, my first trip alone, and I was getting my kicks on Route 66. Destination LA. Then in Gallup, New Mexico, my second-hand Pinto suddenly gave up – just in time for a glorious view of the famous red rocks, set against a crimson and gold sunset. And I swear I saw a pinto pony with a rider in full Native American dress.

I stayed in “The Land of Enchantment” for six months – hitting the ski trails, listening to coyotes, poking around ghost towns, peering into abandoned gold mines, admiring Native American art and learning to ride a horse. And with help from the odd job, I was able to buy myself a Stetson and a pair of Tony Lama Snakeskin Cowboy Boots. I never did get to L.A. Some day I’ll go back to New Mexico, though I may have to wait for retirement. Luckily the hat is always in style, the boots are good for a lifetime and thanks to the Snakeskin Cross Discus, I still have my memories.
